Abstract

The purpose of this case is to help students understand the international expansion decision and the factors, accounting and operating, that play a vital role in that decision. A firm is considering its first international expansion and has two distinctively different nations to consider in Europe. Important factors in the decision include identification of "success factors" that define the character and philosophy of the firm and their application to the investment opportunities in the two nations. The role of culture in the international investment decision is also emphasized in the case. the case then integrates the accounting for the investment in the foreign subsidiary and the role that plays in the following up on the original decision and evaluating the actual results.

Usage

The case can be used in intermediate, advanced, or international accounting courses. Prior to solving the case, students should understand the basics of international investment and accounting for long-term investments.
